About us.
Plant Magic Homestead is located on 10 acres in southwest Michigan. The land resides in a micro-climate known as the fruit belt, an area where most of the fruit production of Michigan takes place. Our micro-climate offers a milder winter compared to the rest of the state, due to its proximity to Lake Michigan.
We focus on building up the soil using what the forest provides us. The majority of the land is wooded, providing plentiful fungal food for our gardens. We use a combination of compost, forest duff, spent mushroom blocks, wood chips, straw, and logs to build upon the native soil in the layering mound style of Hügelkultur.
Starting fresh as stewards of this land, our first project was setting up a cannabis breeding patch to create unique varieties with hash production in mind. Following, we began pondering where to place our vegetable garden, compost, fruit forest, green houses, chickens, and bees. We decided to put the bees in multiple locations around the property to see if each location would produce a slightly different tasting honey. Half of the hives reside in the woods, while the other half are near our vegetable and flower garden.
Currently, we intentionally share our land with honey bees and chickens. Our vegetable garden is growing and we enjoy experimenting with a wide array of peppers, garlic, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, medicinal herbs, and flowers. We’ve planted a small orchard near our hash hoops that houses peach, apple, pear, cherry, and pawpaw trees. We’ve also discovered grapes, autumn olives, and blackberries established on the land.
As our homestead forms and grows, we hope to share abundance and build community. We look forward sharing this journey with you.
